Despite his recent lockup and released without charges, Alkaline has passed the incarcerated Vybz Kartel to become the most popular dancehall artist currently. The turnout at the recent concert “New Rules” was the largest crowd for any one dancehall artist. Shows like Sting and the now defunct Champions in Action draw larger crowds but patrons are going there to see multiple artists.
For “New Rules”, almost all the fans were there to see the Vendetta boss.
Alkaline is also confirmed to perform on Reggae Sumfest 2017, even though he was accused of not performing in Jamaica by fellow dancehall star Beenie Man.
Alkaline is the most talked about dancehall artist on social media, whether he is lyrically assassinating another dancehall artist or if he is in police custody.
Vybz Kartel continues to make hit songs even while behind bars, but because he is not able to do any interviews or live performances, his popularity can’t rival that of Alkaline.
If Alkaline can keep his mouth clean and stay out of trouble, he may one day be in the argument of who is the king of the dancehall.
