Describe a typical white person.

Is there such a thing as a typical white person? Or a typical Black person? What about a typical Hispanic or typical Asian? No there is not. When we start to look at people as typical something, that is where stereotyping and prejudices take over. There is no typical ethnicity. Every person is an individual and should be treated as such based on their own merit.

One worrisome quote that came from a most unlikely source, was a quote from the Reverend Jesse Jackson. Most people know that Jesse Jackson is a staunch supporter of justice and equality for minorities, yet he had no problem saying the following:

There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery and then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved.

Although I understand the point Jesse Jackson was trying to make, I find it amazing that the way the person coming up from behind acts has nothing to do with the fear in Jackson’s heart, but rather the level of fear or relief is based solely on the color of the person coming up from behind skin.

So why would Black footsteps from behind cause fear while the white footsteps brings relief? Is a typical white person more honest than a typical Black person?

Who is the typical white person? Is it Bill Gates or Timothy McVeigh? Is it Eminem or Michael Bolton? Is it Paris Hilton or Hilary Clinton? Is a white man with locks a typical white man? Is a white man with locks different than a Black man with locks? What about a white man with a gun and a Black man with a gun; does the Black man with the gun pose a greater threat?

Is there such a thing as a typical white person?

What do you think of Jesse Jackson’s comment above?
