When did Jamaica become so sexually risqué and how did it get there so fast? It seems like it was just yesterday Jamaicans would not admit that they were bowcats (people who practice oral sex). Today, many Jamaicans are not only more than happy to demonstrate how they perform the act, some will actually perform the act in the middle of a dancehall. Talk about a change in direction.
Jamaicans used to put both hands in the air when a dancehall entertainer would say, “wave yuh hand if yuh nuh suck no pussy”. Now a song by Gage called “dung inna yuh throat” is one of the favorite in the dancehall. Equally, all hands would be raised when dancehall reggae artists chanted anti-buggery lyrics, but just last year photos were released what were allegedly the world boss, Vybz Kartel, performing anal sex with a woman. It is a far cry from what the dancehall culture used to stand for. Depending on what side you are on, someone either destroyed Jamaica and dancehall’s sexual culture or someone liberated dancehall Jamaica and dancehall’s sexual culture.
Now the country and the sex shops are in a frenzy awaiting the release of the movie “Fifty Shades of Gray”. The movie comes out right in time for Valentine’s Day celebrations.
The film, starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, is based on the book trilogy by E.L. James. It follows the relationship between graduate Anastasia Steele and successful businessman Christian Grey, who introduces her to the world of S&M and role play.
As a result, the sex retailers in Jamaica has been stockpiling on various sex toys. The owner and operator of Fetish Secretz Adult Novelty store, located at Hillview Avenue, told 18 KARAT REGGAE that she has experienced an increase in sales since the announcement of ‘50 Shades of Grey‘ to be released in Jamaica.
“We’ve been getting in new stock, especially handcuffs, masks and ties. We’ve seen an increase in sales since the start of the month and I’m definitely expecting more sales with the release of the film. All of the toys and accessories that were used in the book will be on sale. This includes floggers, paddles, whips and Ben Wa balls. We’ll also be hosting a ‘Sip and Shop’ on Valentine’s Day.” she stated.
Similarly, Entice Intimate Boutique, located in Orchid Village, stated that they too would be having a ‘50 Shades of Grey‘ special.
“We’ve brought in extra toys to ensure that we have enough because we are expecting a great demand. From what I’ve been hearing, I know that we’ll be seeing an increase in sales. So, for the entire weekend, we’ll be having a special on sex toys,” the store manager, Kimone, told 18 KARAT REGGAE.
PlayHouse Jamaica, a virtual adult novelty store has also increased the amount of bondage toys they stock.
“Well, from the book itself came out, we’ve decided to start carrying additional toys due to requests. More people have been asking about Ben Wa balls & bed restraints. With the upcoming movie release, we have stepped up stock in anticipation, coupled with the fact that it’s Valentine’s Day. When we started bondage toys were very rare. Now, people are making reference to the book with regards to toys, so with the visuals of a movie I’m anticipating a greater rush for toys,” Mr. PlayHouse stated.
It is difficult to believe that this is the same Jamaica. Surely the island has experienced some drastic changes in behavior over the years. The question is, what are who brought about these changes?
