What should happen when a white hip-hop fan is listening to a rap song and the word n-word is plastered all over the song? Should they stop listening to the song? Or can they listen as long as they don’t sing along? Better yet, can they sing along as long as it is in private and they are not being taped for what will become a viral vine or youtube video?
Imagine a white woman sitting on a couch, wearing a University of Oklahoma shirt and she is saying the words: “nigga… nigga… nigga just watch”. That is definitely not ok in most people book. Now imagine that you come to find out that she is just singing along to a rap song. Does that make it ok? That is where things get blurry.
The above situation actually happened to a woman name Beauton Gilbow.
The release of the Vine video, featuring the house mother of the campus’ Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter, couldn’t come at a worse time — just days after video surfaced of frat members singing a racist song.
But Beauton Gilbow, the fraternity’s house mother, insists she’s not racist. And two black alumni of the fraternity house agree with the woman they call “Mom B.”
“I have been made aware that a video of me that is circulating on social media and in the news,” Gilbow said in a statement. “I am heartbroken by the portrayal that I am in some way racist. I have friends of all races and do not tolerate any form of discrimination in my life.
The song in the background was the sound of “All Gold Everything” from Trinidad James — a black, Atlanta-based rapper.
“I was singing along to a Trinidad song, but completely understand how the video must appear in the context of the events that occurred this week.”
So with rap song littered with the N-word, should whites not allowed to be fans of certain kind of rap songs? Is a white person racist for singing a rap song that contains the N-word? Should Blacks have a right to use the N-word but other ethnicities can’t?
What the frat boys were doing was vile, despicable and racist. What Beauton Gilbow was doing was sing along to a rap song playing in the background. Whether she is racist or not, only she and those who know her well know the answer.
Maybe it is full time, everyone, including rappers just stop using the N-Word.
