Taylor Swift shared another “important event” in her life Thursday, revealing that her mother, Andrea Finlay, has cancer.
The singer posted “Just So You Know …” on Tumblr with news of her mom’s diagnosis.
Swift admitted in the post that usually she writes songs to share her feelings about life events, but this one felt as if it needed to be shared now. The 25-year-old said she and her brother urged their mom to have a health screening at Christmas.
“There were no red flags and she felt perfectly fine, but she did it just to get me and my brother off her case about it,” Swift wrote. “The results came in, and I’m saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer.”
Swift went on to say she is keeping the details about Finlay’s condition and treatment private. But her mom felt compelled to share the news.
“She wanted you to know because your parents may be too busy juggling everything they’ve got going on to go to the doctor, and maybe you reminding them to go get checked for cancer could possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle,” Swift said. “Or peace of mind in knowing that they’re healthy and there’s nothing to worry about. She wanted you to know why she may not be at as many shows this tour. She’s got an important battle to fight.”
The mother and daughter have always had a close relationship. Swift even released “The Best Day” for her mom on Mother’s Day in 2011.
