Americans are quick to tell you how much they love their American soldiers. How they appreciate the fact that these soldiers are willing to sacrifice their lives to protect what Americans hold so dearly, their “freedom”. But did you know that five American Soldiers die in Iraq and Afghanistan last week? Probably not. You know why you did not know about it? Because all Americans were talking about last week was the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
It is not like the fight was not important, it was. But some things are more important than others. Is a fight in a boxing ring more important than those fighting and giving their lives for the freedom of millions? Of course the people will blame the media and in return the media will say they only report what the people want. Americans will say whatever they think will make them sound more patriotic, but their actions speak a lot louder than their words. The truth is Americans are more interested in whether or not Beyonce is wearing underwear than they are in members of the military.
One third of all homeless Americans are veterans. So for every homeless person you pass with an “I will work for food” sign, one of them have fought and even got injured for American “freedom”. With all these wealthy American individuals and corporations, how can anyone explain so many veterans being homeless? It is a disgrace to see how these homeless veterans are treated on the New York City Subway. When they enter a train begging for money the passengers look at them with disgust and scorn. Yes, the veterans who fought for this very country’s freedom are treated like bums.
Americans overall, but especially the wealthy individual and corporations should step up and do a better job helping out their veterans. After all, if it was not for these same veterans, imagine how much you would be paying for a gallon of gas.
