Talk about Rihanna’s upcoming eighth studio album has been buzzing for a while now, and though three singles have already been released from the project, it’s apparently still in the production stages. The word on the street is that more than half of the songs on the album with be a mix of reggae dancehall.

Rihanna is known for adding her signature island flare to her albums but for this project she is reaching out to a number of reggae dancehall producers and artists in Jamaica and the United States.

Brooklyn producer, DJ Dre Skull, the founder of Popcaan and Vybz Kartel’s current label, Mixpak Records leaked the news, saying that Rihanna has been contacting some of the reggae dancehall artists that he has worked with.

“I know firsthand and secondhand that she’s been reaching out to a lot of people in the reggae dancehall world,” he said. “I’m not suggesting it’s gonna be 100% reggae dancehall but her people are excited about reggae dancehall and to work in that sort of context.”

In terms of any particular artists or regions that the Bajan singer’s people have reached out to, some of Skull’s clients and friends were mentioned. “They’ve reached out to Vybz Kartel and Popcaan, but I’ve talked to a number of people in Jamaica that they’re reached out to.”

Dre Skull did say, however, that though Rihanna’s team is actively exploring the reggae dancehall music circuit, that doesn’t guarantee that she will be able to work with every artist and producer that she has in mind.

She might have a hard time working with top DJ, Vybz Kartel, as he is currently serving a life sentence for murder.

This is perfect timing for Rihanna to be diving more into reggae dancehall. A void has been left in the genre since Vybz Kartel has been incarcerated. None of the male artist in Jamaica has been able to fill this void, it will be interesting to see if a female from Barbados can fill it.
