The LASCO Affiliated Group of Companies has apologised and sacked an employee for an offensive tweet about gold medal-winning Olympian Omar McLeod. The offensive tweet about McLeod was posted after he won gold in the 110-metre hurdles at the Rio Olympics on Tuesday night. The Gleaner Company’s Terri-Karelle Reid asked twitter users, “If you could caption tomorrow’s Jamaica Gleaner front page of Omar McLeod what would it read?” Lasco Jamaica’s twitter account posted “Goldfish” in response to the question. In Jamaica, “fish” is a derogatory term to describe homosexual men.

Lasco initially claimed that its account was hacked but later announced that the post was made by an employee who had since been fired. The company also apologised to McLeod and Jamaicans, noting that the post does not represent its values.

“We wish to sincerely apologize to our fans, friends, customers, consumers, partners, Jamaicans and everyone for this terrible act. Most importantly, we issue our sincerest apologies to Mr. Omar McLeod,” Lasco said in a statement posted to its social media platforms.

“The LASCO Affiliated Companies are also offended by such utterances which are a clear breach of our own values. Consequently, we have removed the tweet and deactivated the account. Further, we have terminated the employee who posted the tweet as this action was a violation of our code of conduct,” the company added, saying it has “the utmost respect for the remarkable achievement of Omar McLeod.”

The company said it deeply regrets any embarrassment this situation may have caused. #LoopsJamaica
