Vybz Kartel and other prisoners at the St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre have developed a product called Sweet Potato Skin Whitening Lotion.

According to Senior Superintendent Herbert McFarlane, who heads the correctional facility, the newly developed skin whitener is “selling like hot bread.”

Vybz Kartel is living proof that Marcus Garvey was right when he said that you could chain or imprison the bodies of men but you could not chain or imprison the minds of men. Kartel shows that he is not only a genius when it comes to writing lyrics, but he overall creatively gifted and a very intelligent business man. The new bleaching cream developed by Kartel and his fellow inmates is said to do much more than just lightening the skin.

“It helps with discolouration. If you have discolouration, it’s a lotion that would helps to enhance the skin to make it look better. When people come here and see the products, they get excited” McFarlane told a Jamaican tabloid.

McFarlane said that he is not at all surprised that Kartel and the other inmates came up with the idea for the Sweet Potato Skin Whitening lotion, as they are very creative and Kartel is a great leader.

“One year they had a theme to make things from cashew and you would be surprised to see how many things they make from it, even cashew tea bag,” he said.

Upon observing the ingredients of the lotion, dermatologist Dr Carol Burrell said she sees no red flags in using the product, which is made from sweet potatoes, mineral oil, xanthan gum, lanolin, glycerine, and water.

“I don’t know what effect sweet potatoes have on the skin, but the other products are used for preservatives and softening agents, and are found in most lotions,” she said.

Currently the bleaching lotion is available to the public whenever there is an expo at the prison facility but it is not yet available to the genral public. With Vybz Kartel’s resources and his business know how, it would not be shocking if the cream hits supermarket shelves pretty soon.
