Vybz Kartel still remains in the hospital after five days as doctors are struggling to find out what cause is kidney infection. Antibiotics alone has not been able to take care of the illness but if doctors know the cause that will allow them to know exactly what kind of treatment to prescribe.
His attorney, Tom Tavares-Finson, confirmed that the world boss was still in the hospital receiving treatment and has not yet improved to the point where he can be released.
“I actually saw him this morning,” Tavares-Finson told 24 Karat Reggae but he refused to give any details on the artist’s condition.
A kidney infection is caused by bacteria entering the urethra and reproducing in the bladder, infecting it. The infection then spreads into the kidneys.
Women are more commonly affected by kidney infection, as are pregnant mothers, children under 2 years of age, and individuals over 60. Since Vybz Kartel does not fit any of these categories, it makes it more difficult for doctors to find the root cause of his illness.
Dr. Elon Thompson, president of Jamaica Medical Doctors’ Association, said the decision to admit a patient who presents with a kidney infection is usually made “if, after receiving antibiotics, the conditions do not change.”
Earlier this week, Hugh Wildman, former director of public prosecutions in Grenada, opined that the admittance would not have been made unless the situation was deemed urgent or dire by the correctional facility’s medical staff. Under such circumstances, prison authorities would be required to escort the inmate to a hospital.
“If the prison doctor says so, they will have to do it. They make the call to say whether an inmate demands or requires immediate hospitalization. They could not defy the medical opinion and not get treatment for an inmate. That is a judgment call by the medical professionals, not by the lawman,” Wildman said.
“If they defy medical opinion and keep him away from medical facility, and something happens like if an inmate dies, the Government will be liable. Seriously too.”
Gaza fans continue to hope and pray for the world boss’ full recovery although some fans have started to accuse the prison and the Jamaican Government of deliberately trying to harm Kartel.
