A recent study by 18 Karat Reggae, shows that more ganja is consumed in New York than in any other city on earth. According 77 tons marijuana is consumed in New York City. Second on the list is Karachi, Pakistan, at 42 tons per year, followed by New Delhi, India at 38 tons. Los Angeles currently ranks fourth at 36 tons but with marijuana now legal in California, we could expect LA to move up the list in the near future.
The study also shows that New York City could bring in an additional $156.4 million worth of annual revenue from legalizing and taxing pot at the same rate that it already does cigarettes.
“This is equivalent to providing nearly three months’ worth of free school meals to every single public school kid in New York City,” says Henry Zack, vice president of Public Relations at 18 Karat Reggae.
Marijuana legalization is already expected to be passed in New Jersey this year. Vermont and New Hampshire are also expected to legalize the herb pretty soon.
In January, Governor Andrew Cuomo called for New York State to form a panel to advise him on the prospect of legalizing ganja. With neighboring states queuing up legislation to legalize the weed, it seems it’s just a matter of time before New Yorkers can get high without worrying about being harassed by the police.
