Bob Marley is the top selling reggae artiste of all time and he is the king of reggae. Sean Paul is the top selling dancehall artiste of all time, so why isn’t he the king of dancehall?
A lot of dancehall fans got bent out of shape recently when Billboard magazine referred to Sean Paul as the king of dancehall. Fans of Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel, Shabba Ranks and Yellowman were all arguing that their favorite artist is the real king of dancehall.
The truth is, however, Billboard was right. As sure as Bob Marley is the king of reggae, Sean Paul is the king of dancehall. Numbers don’t lie and Sean Paul as the numbers to prove that he is king just like Bob Marley does.
Why do fans of dancehall music refuse to give Sean Paul is due? Yes, we all know that he used Super Cat’s style but if had not been for Paul that style would not have been so widely known as it is today. So yes, Super Cat might have created the style, but it is Sean Paul who took it worldwide. With Super Cat that styles mad thousands, Sean Paul used it to make millions.
Of course Sean Paul is not the best lyricist in dancehall, neither does he have the best voice or flow but he has what it take to connect to the people or at least make them want to buy his music.
Bob Marley did not have the greatest voice, he did not write the best songs but he is the most famous and has sold more records worldwide than any other reggae artist, thus making him the king.
Sean Paul does not have the greatest voice, he does not write the best songs but he is the most famous and has sold more records worldwide than any other dancehall artist, thus making him the king.
So yes, Sean Paul might not be your favorite artiste but that is no reason to get angry because a publication refers to him as the king of dancehall. His sales numbers say that he is.
