Could Vybz Kartel draw 20,000 fans? Alkaline did.

Promoter and her sisteren dem a laugh; how dem laugh? Chalalalalalalah. Yes, promoter Sunshine is still laughing almost a week later as she counts the money from the ticket sales from the New Rules concert headlined by Alkaline.

Say what you want about Alakaline but one thing is for sure, Jamaicans love the young deejay. He might have flopped at Reggae Sumfest as many alleged he did over over three years ago. He might not have performed in Jamaica in over three years as the self-proclaimed king of the dancehall, Beenie Man recently pointed out. However, that did not stop Jamaicans from coming out in the thousands to check out the Vendetta boss.

According to the show’s promoter Sunshine, who who was also the host, Alkaline did what no other dancehall has done or can even do.

“It was a phenomenal show, I expected it to be huge, but not that big, so much so that people were even on the stage. I had to stop and allow the moment to soak in before I spoke onstage. It goes to show that no matter how people fight you, the bigger you can become. I am proud of him because through everything, he has remained focused, and for his age, I am very proud of him,” she said.

Of course the Gaza fans are making it clear that Vybz Kartel could have drawn an even bigger crowd. On Chiney K’s 2PM show on the 18 Karat Reggae page, some fans said that if it was Kartel in concert, it could not be kept in the National Stadium car park but would have to be kept inside the stadium itself.

Maybe fans of the world boss are correct but as of right now we don’t know. The fact is, Alkaline did something that Kartel has not done yet and that is drawing of 20,000 fans to his concert.

Promoter Sunshine is too busy reveling in the show’s success to worry about any negativity from the Vybz Kartel fans.

I didn’t see most of the coverage. I was not really interested in that. I saw what I saw, and it was all positive. For an artiste to be able to draw such a crowd, a young act, at that, to me, is the bigger story. At end of the day, no matter what you do, people will always find something negative to say,” she said.

Alkaline’s manager, Keerena Beckford, was just as happy as Sunshine when she spoke to 18 Karat Reggae.

“We were looking for 10,000 to 15,000 patrons. So it’s a win for us because we are still yet to know how many patrons turned out. What I can tell you is that we have already crossed the 20,000 mark,” she said.
