A Nevada man says he would rather have a dead son than a gay son and sadly he put his words and thought into brutal action.
Police were called to a house over a domestic disturbance last week. Upon their arrival, they found 14-year-old Giovanni Melton in critical condition and rushed him to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries.
Giovanni was apparently shot by his 53-year-old father, Wendell Melton, after an argument over the boy’s sexuality. After Giovanni revealed that he had a boyfriend, the father did not take it well and their argument turned physical.
“Giovanni was abused physically and mentally and spiritually for many, many years,” Sonja Jones, Giovanni’s former foster mom, told 18 Karat Reggae.
“He hated the fact that his son was gay,” Jones added. “I’m sure that inside of his mind, he would rather have a dead son than a gay son.”
Wendell is now facing charges of open murder, child abuse and prohibited person possessing a firearm. It is possible that he could be charged with a hate crime which would be the first hate crime charge where the parent was the perpetrator and the child was the victim.
Giovanni is remembered by his classmates as an intelligent, kind and energetic young man who could make anyone smile.
“I hope they throw the book at him. I hope he never sees the light of day,” one of Giovanni’s classmates said of Wendell. “I hope every day when he looks in the mirror; he sees his son’s face.” She continued.
“He was my brother, my everything,” Alexander Melton told 18 Karat Reggae, adding that Giovanni was a kind soul who wouldn’t hurt a fly. “He was never afraid to try new things and he was such a smart, young man who everyone loved.”
