The world cup opener was not much of a match as Russia trampled all over Saudi Arabia. Playing in front of their fans, the home team took an early 2-0 lead in the first half.
Yuri Gazinky started the scoring for the Russians with a beautiful header in the 12 minute and from there the Saudis just seemed to be outclassed and playing on a level where they did not belong.
In the second half, the Russians added another three goals, two of which were from substitute players.
Russian president, Vladimir Putin, was seen in the stance with an ear to ear smile as his country’s team showed some brilliance against a weak Saudi Arabia side.
Russia’s leading striker, Fedor Smolov, did not score in the match but he did not need to. If the Russians are to go far in the tournament, however, his goal scoring prowess is something they will need.
