Today is a very big day for dancehall music. It could quite possible be the biggest day in the genre of the music. Today marks the start of Vybz Kartel’s appeal.
Today and what happens in the days or weeks to follow will decide if dancehall fans will ever again get the chance to see the man most consider the greatest dancehall artiste of all time.
Vybz Kartel along with three others, who were convicted for murder, begin their appeal today.
Attorney for Kartel’s co-accused, Shawn Campbell better known as Shawn Storm is confident that based on the strong evidence all four defendants will be free men when all is said and done.
“My team of attorneys will be arguing that fresh evidence should to be admitted in the case. We are a team working for all four appellants, and we believe that there is sufficient grounds of appeal that will spur the Court of Appeal to look seriously at this matter,” Samuels said to a reporter from another Jamaican news outlet.
18 Karat Reggae was informed by another Jamaican lawyer that new evidence cannot be introduced in an appeal and could only be introduced if the defendants get a retrial.
“The grounds of appeal span between the judge being biased, the accused, Shawn Campbell, not being present for the composition of (the) jury, and also being denied the right of hearing and right to be present when material evidence was being presented against him,” Samuels added.
“The main witness of fact actually said two different things. One statement said that he got to Swallowfield Avenue at 5:30 p.m., and then to the police, he said he got there at 8:00 in the night. And we have the cell site evidence that shows that Williams, rather than being at Swallowfield Avenue, was in St Catherine at the time he was allegedly being assaulted. The cell site evidence proves that way after 7:00, the deceased was still in St Catherine, that is scientific evidence,” Samuels said.
Fans of Vybz Kartel will be glued to all the happenings in the Court of Appeal this week. Most of Kartel’s music promote raunchy sex and extreme violence but this week all of his fans will be praying that the so-called world boss wins his appeal.
Vybz Kartel whose given name is Adidja Palmer, is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams. If he fails to win his appeal, he will be eligible for parole after serving 35 years.
