When Vybz Kartel released his album “Of Dons and Divas” earlier this year, the world boss proudly predicted that his album would win the Reggae Grammy Award. He was so confident in his effort that he even decided to go head to head with the great Buju Banton by releasing the album on the same day Buju released his album “Upside Down 2020”.

The Jamaica Observer is in total disagreement with Vybz Kartel. Not only does the publication not believe that the Vybz Kartel album is worthy of the Reggae Grammy Award, they do not even recognize it as being worth for a nomination.

The Observer just released who they believe should be the Reggae Grammy nominees and while Buju Banton is on the list as expected, Kartel is nowhere to be found.

These are the albums that the Observer believe are worthy for the Reggae Grammy nominations:

Got to Be Tough — Toots and the Maytals
Higher Place — Skip Marley
Upside Down 2020 — Buju Banton
Chiliagon — Spragga Benz
Look for The Good — Jason Mraz
Fixtape — Popcaan

The funny thing is, one of the albums the Jamaica Observer saw as more deserving for a Reggae Grammy is not even Reggae Music and at best could be classified as “Reggaeish” or “Dancehallish”.

Maybe Kartel’s lackluster sales is one of the reason the newspaper does not see it Grammy nomination worthy, but the deejay’s 1,106 album sales is not far behind Skip Marley’s 1.786 and it is above Spragga Benz’s 876 copies sold.

The 63rd Grammy awards takes place on January 31 in Los Angeles.
