The Orlando Gay Club shooting is not the worst in American History.

Orlando shooting was not the worst Orlando shooting was not the worst

By: Kilian Reid Nance

What happened in the early morning hours in Orlando, Florida was truly heart breaking, but to call it the worst massacre on American soil is incorrect.

On the morning of November 29, 1864, outside of Ft. Lyon, Colorado, over 150 elders, women, and children were shot to death. Some of the women murdered were pregnant.

Don’t forget the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29, 1890 when the 7th Cavalry opened fire and murdered what some estimate as close to 300 dead.

Then there is Tulsa, Oklahoma. On May 31, 1921 a group of whites attacked the Greenwood District of Tulsa, a black community, and burned both black hospitals, 35 city blocks were destroyed, over $26 million in damages, and black fatalities estimated between 55 to 300 even though the “official” count of casualties by the Oklahoma Department of Vital Statistics was 39 but they, they were trying to cover it up and the events weren’t taught in the Oklahoma History class I was required to take in high school.
