In December of last year, after a couple with Islamic ties killed 14 people at an office party in California, Donald Trump suggested a ban on all Muslims entering the United States. As ridiculous as Trump’s suggestion was, white right wing conservatives glowed in support of the billionaire presidential hopeful.

With the mass shooting that just unfolded in the LBGT night club in Orlando, before the background of the shooter was even revealed, Donald Trump wasted no time in trying to get political mileage from the tragedy. The presumptive Republican nominee tweeted:

“Really bad shooting in Orlando. Police investigating possible terrorism. Many people dead and wounded.”

No condolences to the families and friends of the victims. He did not ask his followers to pray for the victims and their families. Now of course twitter’s 144-character limit may have prevented Trump from saying all what he wanted to say, but he did not immediately follow up with a tweet of compassion. It is almost like the man lacks real human qualities.

Despite the fact that there is no real link between immigration and terrorism, the idea that controlling the Muslim population in the United States would eradicate terrorism persists, and Trump has consistently fueled that dangerous hatred. Every time Trump spews his hatred, his white right wing base grows by huge numbers.

So as heart wrenching and sad as this tragedy is the fact that Trump had nothing compassionate to say, shows that he is celebrating the political mileage he will gain from this tragedy.
