ESPN commentator Doug Adler is in hot water for comparing the beautiful Venus Williams to a gorilla after she won her second-round match at the Australian Open.
“She misses a first serve and Venus is all over her,” Adler said of Williams’ opponent, Stefanie Voegele, “You see Venus move in put the gorilla effect on. Charging.”
The gorilla comparison is a term that was used by racist rednecks to describe the outgoing first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama. During the presidential election a female government employee referred to Mrs. Obama has a “gorilla in heels”, event though Mrs. Obama is 100 times more beautiful than the woman who made the rude and racist comment.
This is not the first time Venus or her sister have had to deal with racism on the tennis circuit.
Both sisters have boycotted the Indian Wells Masters Series Tennis Tournament after participating in the event in 2001, during which the crowd reportedly erupted in boos and taunts when Venus pulled out of her match against Serena at the last minute.
“When Venus and I were walking down the stairs to our seats, people kept calling me ‘n*****,'” Richard Williams, Venus and Serena’s father, told USA Today. “One guy said, ‘I wish it was ’75; we’d skin you alive.’ I had trouble holding back tears. I think Indian Wells disgraced America.”
