There are some who say that reggae does not need a revival because it never went anywhere and it never lost its popularity among true reggae fans. Still others see it as one of the greatest movements this decade, a movement which is led by the likes of Chronixx, Protoje and Jesse Royal.

It is not only men that are carrying the Reggae Revival Movement. There are a few females involved but there is no doubt that Jah9 is the movement’s first lady.

Just last year Jah9 reached number two on the Billboard Reggae chart with her Mad Professor Meets Jah9 album. The album is a combination the female Rasta said she has wanted to do her entire musical career.

“For years, I have been a fan of Mad Professor and when I finally got to meet him I was even more impressed with him as a human being. The chemistry we had worked right away. It was only natural that I had him do a dub of my album. I really wanted him to do a dub of the first one as well, but because I am the one who produced this one, I had more control. It was definitely one of the priorities for me to have Mad Professor interpret the productions on this album. I am very pleased that the album went to number two on the Billboard (charts) in its first week. It was Record Store Week and for an album that is released exclusively on vinyl, I think that is a credit to the people who did the marketing as well as the product itself… so I can’t help but feel good,” she told 18 Karat Reggae.

The dreadlocked artiste shared many tour dates with fellow ‘revivalist’ Chronixx on his Chronology North American tour.

“We reflect upon the experience with sincere honour and gratitude feeling blessed to have shared in this powerful collaboration with our brothers and sisters and to have connected with supporters of the mission. We are truly humbled by the encouragement and love received. For that, we also give thanks.”

By the end of this month, Jah9 returns to North America along with her band for her Unafraid tour with a number of spot gigs and festivals before crossing the Atlantic for the plethora of summer reggae festivals on that continent

Yoga practice forms a huge part of her daily routine, and Jah9 will be incorporating this ancient form of physical exercise and meditation in her performances at a number of stops in what is being called ‘yoga on dub’.

“The mission continues as we prepare to return to the US for the Unafraid Tour: Jah9 Live with the Dub Treatment, and a few select Yoga on Dub sessions. Anticipation swells our hearts as we await the opportunity to connect once again with kings and queens in the US,” she said.
