Lawyers for the son of dancehall entertainer, Mavado, who is facing a charge of murder, tried unsuccessfully to get the 16-year-old released on bail yesterday.
During the bail hearing before the St. Andrew Parish Court, defense attorney Bert Samuels argued that the teenager is a fit candidate for bail, adding that the evidence against him is weak.
Prosecutors strongly opposed bail and stated that they have an eyewitness who knows Mavado’s son personally.
The defense attorney will get another chance to win bail for Mavado’s son on July 31.
The teenager and 23 year old Andre Hines were charged three weeks ago with the murder of Lorenzo Thomas, in Cassava Piece, St. Andrew.
Prosecutors reported that on June 5, men armed with guns, machetes and gasoline, invaded Mr. Thomas’s home.
He was shot, beheaded and his body set ablaze.
The police say Mavado’s son and Mr. Hines were a part of the group that took part in the murder.
They are also charged with conspiracy to murder and arson.
