Things can’t seem to get any worst for the world’s greatest soccer player Lionel Messi. He hardly had time to get over the agonizing loss in the finals of the Copa America where he missed a penalty but now Messi has been sentenced to jail.
The Barcelona star has been sentenced to 21 months in prison after being found guilty of tax fraud, according to widespread reports in Spain.
The 29-year-old and his father were both sentenced to the same amount of time for the same crime.
Barcelona fans do not have to worry about missing the star on the pitch, however. Under Spanish law, neither Messi nor his father would be required to spend any time in prison if the sentence is shorter than two years.
Messi and his father were accused of defrauding Spanish authorities by failing to pay tax on image rights in 2007, 2008 and 2009. They have the right to appeal the sentence.
