Micah Xavier Johnson: From American hero to coward thug.

Micah Xavier Johnson Micah Xavier Johnson

At one point, Micah Xavier Johnson was an American hero. As a young 18-year-old boy, he decided to serve his country and became a member of the Army Reserves. He even served in Afghanistan, which at times can get worse than the Southside of Chicago. Yes, that is what heroes are made of, selfless people who are willing to put their lives on the line for the benefit of others.

So what drove this hero to becoming a “coward”? At least that is narrative we are hearing from both the left and the right, even the Black Lives Matter movement that is supposedly one of his source of inspiration. How does a hero transform into a coward, gunning down 5 heroes in the process?

Did Johnson give up hope on what he was taught is the correct way to fight for equal rights and justice? Did he no longer believe that marching and protesting while singing “we shall overcome” and carrying signs that read “NO JUSTICE NO PEACE” could work? Did he decide to put what had been just empty rhetoric into action and told himself that if Black people can’t have justice then white people will have no peace?

In America, even the wanna-be-police gets a free pass to hunt and slaughter Black men as in the case of George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin. Was it at this point that Micah Xavier Johnson decided that he no longer wanted to be a hero and started planning his cowardly way out? Or maybe it was after hearing Eric Garner squeal, “I can’t breathe… I can’t breathe” while being slowly and painfully choked to death by the New York Police Department (NYPD). Maybe the week in which he carried out his cowardly act was when the straw that broke the camel’s back happened. Maybe seeing the police execute a Black man already pinned to the ground with a gun in his pocket, not his hand, pushed him over the edge. Maybe hearing a little 4-year-old black girl sitting in the backseat of a car and telling her mother, “don’t worry, I am right here with you” as her stepfather bled to death in the front seat, was just too much to bear.

There is a saying that doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is a sign of craziness. All over America, for decades, Blacks have protested against police brutality, yet young Black men continue to be brutalized and slaughtered by the police. Maybe Johnson decided that if his only choices were crazy or coward, then coward was a better option.

The fact that police found the United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) flag in Johnson’s home and the attacks were carried out on July 7 are very significant and is something Black people should take careful note of. The red, black and green flag and the UNIA are Marcus Garvey’s creation. Marcus Garvey prophesies that when the two sevens clash, there will be a spark that will be the start of justice for all prior injustices. So the fact that Johnson’s cowardly act as carried out on 7/7 should not be taken lightly. After all, we have already seen other Marcus Garvey prophecies come true.
