While most Calypso and Soca fans in New York City are gearing up for the upcoming Caribbean parade on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, New York; the Calypso king of the world, Mighty Sparrow, was giving his life to Jesus Christ.
Sparrow, whose given name is Slinger Francisco was taken into the water of Holy Baptism by Vincentan Seventh Day Adventist Pastor Claudius Morgan, popularly known as “Samaritan Singer”, himself a former Calypsonian.
The 87-year-old Calypso bard is known for many of Calypso’s oldie goldies such as ‘Jean and Dinah’, ‘Drunk and Disorderly’, ‘Marajhin’, ‘Saltfish’ and many others.
Sparrow, who now resides in Queens, New York once ruled the Calypso landscape in Trinidad and Tobago and the rest of the world.
Born in Grenada, Sparrow made his recording debut with ‘Yankees Gone’ in 1956.
Sparrow is an eighth time winner of Road March and Calypso King titles in Trinidad and Tobago.
He is now known as Brother Francisco, a member of the Linden Seventh Day Adventist Church in New York.
