When over a thousand Chinese workers came to Jamaica to build the North-South Highway which connects Kingston to Ocho Rios, over half of them did not return to China. Some were even given Jamaican citizenship as the government felt that their engineering skills would ne a great boost for the island’s development.
Now these Chinese engineers are not just helping to build roads and buildings on the island, but they are also immersing themselves in the Jamaican culture. So much so that a group of them just made a bold statement that they are actually the best dancers in Jamaica even though you won’t see them on the dancehall scene.
Lijen Chan, the lead engineer who designed and led the construction of the new fire station in Montego Bay recently released a video of one of his engineers dancing to the song “Inspired” by Rasta Progrez while the other engineers sat down clapping.
“Most Jamaicans think we are just hard workers, which is true but what they don’t realize is that we love to have fun too and we also have fun while working, Chan said. “Many people might even be surprised to know that we are very good dancers, and we actually love dancing to dancehall music.
While Inspired is a Dancehall song, the version the Chinese engineer was dancing to is the house mix version. According to Chan, they prefer to dance to the version because it is more up temp and a reflection of the work habits.
We love the lyrics to the song especially the part that said, ‘I never get tired, I get inspired’ because that’s our work ethic but we love to work fast so we prefer the faster version of the song,” Chan said.
Chan reiterates that he loves living in Jamaica but want all Jamaicans to know that they are not just workers but like every other Jamaican, they want to work hard, play hard and enjoy life, He is challenging any Jamaican to face them in contest dancing to Rasta Progrez – Inspired.
