Dancehall star, Vybz Kartel is waiting on the result from the appeal of his murder conviction while Munga Honorebel is awaiting his court date to answer murder charges.
Dancehall will find itself in a very peculiar place for 2019. A teenage boy at a bus stop in Montego Bay said it best a couple weeks ago. He said dancehall artistes were like flies. When and older lady asked what he meant by that, the boy responded: “Just like flies, dancehall artistes are always in some sh#t, they can’t stay out of sh#t for sh#t.”
Right now dancehall fans are cautiously optimistic that ace deejay Vybz Kartel could be out of prison by early as next month. At the same time, there is a sad reality that another ace deejay, Munga Honorebel, could be going to prison as early as next month.
Kartel who is serving a life sentence for murder will know the result of his appeal by the latest February, while Munga who is awaiting trial for murder will have his case heard as early as February.
With the time a court case usually last in Jamaica, it is safe to say that the Munga trial and the Kartel appeal will definitely overlap each other. Even more interesting is the fact that both cases could come to a conclusion at the exact same time.
The optimal result for dancehall fans and the artistes involved would be for Kartel to win his appeal, Munga wins his case and both men walk free. The possibility that they could both lose their respective case cannot be overlooked, however.
The most interesting scenario, however, would be if Kartel won his case but Munga loses his. That would mean Vybz Kartel leaving prison while Munga Honorebel would be entering prison. It would be like that old ring game that Jamaican children used to play: Room for rent, apply within; when I come out then you come in.
