To the die-hearted Vybz Kartel fans in Jamaica, the caged deejay is still the world boss. But outside of Jamaica, the rest of the world knows that when it comes to dancehall music, both Alkaline and Popcaan are way ahead of Vybz Kartel.
Nowhere is the fact more evident that Unruly and Vendetta are leading Gaza than in the recent MOBO Awards, where Popcaan and Alkaline were among the five nominees along with Chronixx, Aidonia and Damian “Junior Gong” Marley.
If Popcaan who has won the MOBO Award for the last two years should win this year, it would be an historical event as he would be the first artist to win the MOBO three years in a row. Sean Paul has won the MOBO Award six times but never three times in a row. Imagine Popcaan going for his third award when Vybz Kartel has not won even one and this year his name is not even on the list. It is really a shame, especially since Vybz Kartel recently tried to brand himself as the One Done.
Most of the time when a Marley is among the list of reggae nominees they win but all eyes are on the young Alkaline this year. The vendetta boss has been the toast of dancehall and Vybz Kartel has been his beating stick. Alkaline has not won a MOBO as yet but at 24 years old, he and Chronixx are the youngest in the pact and should they keep making hits, they may bypass all the other multiple winners.
To round out the fifth nominee, is former Kartel student, Aidonia.
Gaza fans are angry that Vybz Kartel was not nominated but they are confident that once he is released from prison, he will be winning much more than MOBO Awards, he might even win a Reggae Grammy Award.
