If you have never smoked pot but your buddy has then chances are your buddy has a higher IQ than you.

A new study out of the U.K. indicates that people who start out life with high IQs tend to end up experimenting with marijuana.

Researchers looked at 8,000 Brits and pulled out those who scored high on IQ tests as 5 and 10-year-olds.

Men who scored high on the tests as kids were 50 percent more likely to have experimented with a variety of drugs, chief among them being weed.

Smart women were more than 50 percent likely to have tried marijuana and to a much lesser extent, cocaine.

Although it is not yet clear exactly why there should be a link between high IQ and marijuana use, the authors point to previous research, showing that highly intelligent people are open to experiences and keen on novelty and stimulation.

Other research has also shown that brainy children are often easily bored and suffer at the hands of their peers for being different, “either of which could conceivably increase vulnerability to using drugs as an avoidant coping strategy, marijuana just happens to be the main drug of choice since it has the least negative stigma,” explain the authors.
