Two of the biggest names in dancehall music are behind bars for murder. Vybz Kartel is serving a life sentence while Ninja Man is waiting to be sentenced on December 15.
In life, if you do the crime you should do the time, there should be no exemptions regardless of who you are or your status.
While everyone who gets convicted of a crime gets sentenced to do some serious crimes, judges often use their discretion as long as it is in line with the sentencing guidelines from which they are operating.
While Vybz Kartel was given a life sentence for his murder conviction and has to wait 35 years before he can be eligible for parole, we believe Ninja Man should be made to wait less years before he is eligible for parole.
For one, Ninja Man is 51 years old which is older than Vybz Kartel. If he had to wait 35 years for parole, he would be 86-years-old before he would gain parole eligibility.
Ninja Man, even though charged for murder, was an instrument of peace throughout many Jamaican communities. In fact, residents of Tower Hill and Mall Road agree that is was Ninja Man who caused the two neighboring communities to seize the violence and live in unity with each other. Kartel on the other hand actually promoted violence between Gaza fans and Gull fans.
Ninja Man is also a very charitable person who has done a lot to assist the less fortunate including children, elder and those suffering from various illnesses.
Up until his conviction, Ninja was helping various people through his various charitable organizations. Ninja Man started the One Umbrella, the Ninja Man Foundation and the Ballentyne Community Development Foundation. All of these organizations of helped thousands of Jamaicans. The only thing Kartel assisted anyone with was teaching them how to become better skin bleachers and freaky dancehall pornstars.
These are the things that the judge should consider when sentencing the don gorgon. In the book Things fall apart by Chinua Achebe it says, “If a man washes his hands he can eat with kings.” Ninja Man might have bloodied his hands but he sure has washed them over the last few years and for that he should a lighter sentence than Vybz Kartel. After all, when it comes to “lighter”, Kartel already has more than his fair share, at least where skin tone is concerned.
