Last week I applied for Jamaican Citizenships (by descent) for two of my sons. On the website there is a link that says, “Why should I become a citizen”. At first I just went about printing the citizenship application and filling it out. After all, I already know the reasons why I am a proud born Jamaican and I know the specific reason I was applying for my sons’ citizenship. Curiosity was getting the better of me though, I just had to see what were the main reasons that the Government of Jamaica thought that others should be citizens of Jamaica. So I click the link and this is what it says:
“In becoming a citizen of Jamaica persons will be able to bask in the pride of national achievement and identify with other great Jamaicans such as Bob Marley, Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, Tessane Chin and Louise Bennett among others.”
WTF? I started thinking to myself, am I on the Jamaican Tourist Board site or am I on Jamaica’s Passport Immigration and Citizenship Agency site? Of all the great Jamaicans that have achieved so much and all our Government can list are athletes and entertainers? Aren’t we more than just “run brother run”? Aren’t we more than just “sing sister sing”? Aren’t we more than “dance man dance”? Couldn’t they list the great Marcus Garvey? What about Nanny of the Maroons? Couldn’t they list the great Dutty Boukman?
You could visit the site yourself, here is the address: https://www.pica.gov.jm/?page_id=1554
Someone should tell the Government of Jamaica that what would be a good Tourist Board slogan does not work so well on why one should become a citizen. “RUN BROTHER RUN”… SMH
So from last week this has been bothering me and I had a hard time understanding why the Government would sell the country so cheap. This weekend, I was driving and the thought came to my head again. All of a sudden, I asked myself, “So exactly why are you applying for your son’s Jamaican citizenship?” Then the answer to my own question hit me like a cannon ball, I was applying for it on some “run brother run” bullshit. Oops!
“In our schools, churches, homes and everywhere possible, we must teach the higher development of science to our children; and make sure; and make sure that we have a race of scientists par excellence. For in mathematics and science lies our only hope to withstand the evil designs of modern materialism.” – Marcus Garvey
