Two years after Vybz Kartel’s incarceration for murder, Jamaica’s then National Security Minister, Peter Bunting, told the Jamaican people that because of Kartel’s incarceration, Jamaica was enjoying a decrease in crime.
Whether or not the drop in crime was a result of Kartel’s incarceration no one knows for sure because Bunting did not provide any data to back up his claim. What we do know, however, is that the good times did not last long as the crime rate again skyrocketed on the island.
There are claims, however, that the community of Waterford in Portmore has enjoyed significant crime reduction after Kartel was sentenced to life and the community has continued to enjoy that peacefulness even today. The Government has not release such information but many on social media is saying that is the case.
In fact, when a recent poll conducted by 18 Karat Reggae showed that the majority of people living in Jamaica want Kartel to be freed, residents of Waterford said that was not necessarily the case.
“Me sure dem never go Waterford and asked the elders since kartel incarnation crime has decreased significantly in Waterford, FACTS,” one person said.
Others even mention that there was a time when people living in Waterford were selling their houses for cheap just so that they could leave the community.
If you live in Waterford, we want to hear from you. Please leave a comment below and let us know if there has been a drop in crime in the community in the last 5 years.
