Fans of the self-proclaimed “King of Dancehall”, Vybz Kartel has started a new movement called “Vybz Kartel 2020.”
Original the movement was called “Free Vybz Kartel” which was a rallying cry for the freedom of the incarcerated deejay who is currently serving a life sentence for a murder conviction. Attorneys for the entertainer filed an appeal on his behalf over 18 months now but the appeals court has yet to return with a verdict.
While fans anxiously await the verdict, they are convinced that 2020 will be the year when Kartel will be back in the streets and on the stage pleasing his fans. There are many in the dancehall community who believe that if and when the world boss is released it will be bigger than when Buju Banton was released from an American prison.
Buju Banton’s “Long Walk to Freedom” tour is the most successful reggae tour since Bob Marley’s “Babylon by Bus” tour some 40 years ago. So the expectation that Kartel’s tour will be more successful that Buju’s in no small feat. Some are even going as far to say that the national stadium will not be big enough to hold all the fans who will be clamoring to see Kartel perform in 2020.
Bert Samuels, the attorney for Vybz Kartel not only believes the entertainer will be a free man in 2020 but he is hoping that the deejay will actually be able to spend this Christmas with his family.
“It is now one year and six months since the court reserved, so my client anxiety is heightening. He is in high spirits and is hoping that he will not have to spend Christmas where he is, but will be able to rejoin his family,” Samuels said.
Even if Kartel is not freed by Christmas, it is difficult to imagine a scenario where fans won’t know his fate in 2020. After all, 18 months waiting for the verdict on an appeal is already too long by most standards.
