According to the Jamaica Court of Appeal, appeal cases have lasted anywhere from less than a week to over a year. This means that if Vybz Kartel’s appeal trial which is set to get underway on Monday, July 9th, goes by quickly, the world boss will know his fate next week.
In most appeal cases, most of the time is spent preparing for the actual appeal and filing all the necessary paperwork and motions. No new evidence can be introduced in an appeal case so you usually don’t see all the delays you see in the original case.
Though not likely, it is possible that Vybz Kartel’s attorneys could make their case on Monday, the prosecutor could rebut on Tuesday and by Wednesday the appeal judges could render their decision. If Kartel wins his appeal he would be released immediately. So Gaza fans could actually plan their world boss homecoming party for next weekend.
There were talks on the 18 Karat Reggae Facebook page that the world boss would be given bail while his appeal is taking place. However, we checked with criminal defense attorney, Leroy Martin, and he informed us that is not the case in life sentences because of flight risk.
“Imagine if you give bail to man who is serving a life sentence while his appeal is being heard. What are the chances of that man turning himself in if he loses the appeal,” Martin said.
On March 13, 2014, Vybz Kartel along with his 3 co-accused were convicted for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.
Kartel appeal case was set for January of this year but it had to be pushed back after rumors surface in the streets that the artiste was having a difficult time coming up with legal fees.
