Dancehall Reggae fans can say what they want about Alkaline but one thing is for sure, when it comes to lyrics, the deejay pull no punches. In the lead single “City” from his soon to be released album New Level Unlocked, Alkaline took some lyrical shots at both Vybz Kartel and the world boss’ former protoje Popcaan.

Many in the dancehall community have said that Alkaline rose to fame with Vybz Kartel’s style and therefore should pay respect to the leader of the Gaza. Alkaline had the following lyrics for those people who believe he should show respect to Kartel: “Everybody vex ova weh mi never say, dem say mi need fi show respect to the dead.”

Of course Kartel is alive but locked behind bars. While Alkaline did not mention if he might give Kartel respect n the future he certainly did not do it in this song nor on his upcoming album. He did not stop at Kartel, however, he continued with lyrical jabs aimed at Popcaan, “Mi nuh understand weh some other man a medz but mi jus couldn’t put nuh bubbles ina mi head,” obviously referring back to when Popcaan used to wear bubbles in his air.

Alkaline made it clear that it is him and no one else who is locking the city, at least where dancehall is concerned.
