There was a time when dancehall was the mouthpiece of Jamaican culture but that has changed to the point where even “the poor people’s governor”, Bounty Killer is no longer making sense.
Dancehall used to be the genre of music that let young Jamaicans know what was acceptable in Jamaican society, or better yet what was not acceptable. No informers, no skin bleachers, no bow cats, no batty man, no sodomites, no dash whey belly, no licky licky, no wanga gut, love God and live or hate him and die; those were all things Jamaicans learned from dancehall the music, and dancehall the place you went to enjoy the music.
Now it seems like everything that dancehall used to say was not acceptable, is now acceptable. For better or for worse, dancehall has been liberated. It is a liberation that must be credited to Vybz Kartel.
As dancehall was getting more and more liberal led by Vybz Kartel, Bounty Killer was the one artist that fans could depend on to keep the order in dancehall more closely aligned to the more conservative reggae. Now, however, the wisdom that fans had grown used to from Bounty seems to be gone. The Grung Gad seems like he is no longer anchored down in righteousness but has become an empty vessel just blowing in the wind.
This has left fans asking if this is the same Bounty Killer that gave the world lyrics like, “when you show us hope, we will show you peace.”
Just last week, Bounty Killer came out in staunch support of abortion and his reason was that women should have a right to do what they want to their bodies. Even for those who don’t support abortion, they have to agree that a woman should have a right to decide what she does with her own body. However, this week Bounty Killer came criticizing women who have breast augmentations or butt enhancements. What the f#%k? But just a week earlier a woman should have a right to do what she wants to her body.
So by Bounty Killer’s logic, a woman should have the right to let a doctor insert a vacuum through her vagina and suck out a living and breathing unborn child, thus killing it. However, a woman has no right to let a doctor insert an injection in her butt in order to have a larger buttock. That is not just hypocrisy, that is total nonsense.
Bounty Killer has gone from being the voice of reasoning, the voice of the ghetto, to being of the villains in I-Wayne’s song “The book of life”.
They separate men and women, lock them in a cages
They say more sodomy to less babies
They say more birth control and abortion for the ladies
