Now we know why Lil Wayne endorsed Donald Trump during the lead up to the presidential election.
It has been revealed that Lil Wayne is facing a federal weapons charge in connection with a December 2019 plane search in Florida. It is a charge that could see the rapper going to prison for a maximum of 10 years.
Hip hop fans were shocked when Wayne came out in support of Trump but now it is all making sense. The lame duck president as never been shy about using his pardon power, especially for those who support him and hip hop stars have been beneficiaries of presidential pardons over the years. Former president Obama pardoned the rapper, Tampa Tony, before he left office and his predecessor, George Bush, also pardoned John Forte, a rapper and producer of the group Fugees.
On Tuesday afternoon, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida has charged Weezy with one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.
It is being reported that attorneys for Lil Wayne knew the charges were coming since August.
With the plane’s search, which occurred ahead of its final stop in California, Miami-Dade police were acting on what the Miami Herald said at the time was “a tip about weapons and marijuana.” Federal agents were alerted in order to secure a search warrant to give the private plane a look at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport.
In a statement to Complex on Tuesday, Weezy’s attorney Howard Srebnick explained that his client has been charged for “possessing a gold-plated handgun” in his luggage while traveling on the plane. Srebnick also highlighted the fact that there is “no allegation that he is a dangerous person.”
