Let’s be clear, I hate Valentine’s Day. And it is not because I’m a jealous hater or whatever. It is because it is a stupid holiday. Now, the premise of Valentine’s Day is actually perfectly legitimate. Valentine’s Day is named for all the martyred Christian Valentine’s. There are many legends regarding how present day Valentine’s Day came to be. For instance, one Valentine illegally married couples in Rome. No matter how it came to be, it has evolved into a holiday celebrating love, and that in itself is not a bad thing.
My problem is that, to me, Valentine’s Day is nothing but a consumer holiday, in which the media capitalizes on people’s insecurities, people’s obsession with material things (particularly to fill whatever voids may exist within) and people’s compulsive need to compare themselves to others while their life is passing by. Why are we comparing ourselves to others and holding ourselves to any standards that are not our own? If you really think that your partner does not love you if they do not get you something on Valentine’s day then you need to reevaluate yourself and your relationship; if you get mad because they did not spend enough money on you or because you don’t like their gift then you need to reevaluate yourself and your relationship; if you get mad because your friend’s partner did something more extravagant than yours and you expected more, then you need to reevaluate yourself and your relationship. Essentially, if your relationship is so fragile that it is built around what your partner gets you for Valentine’s a Day, then maybe you need to find someone new; if you value that person so little, then maybe you should consider being alone.
Moreover, you mean to tell me we need to designate a specific day of the year to celebrate love? If I love you today, I love you in May; I love you in December; and hopefully, I love you forever. I do not limit myself to February 14. And I don’t limit myself to cheap symbolism and store bought trinkets. There are seconds, minutes, moments, and years to create inside jokes, memories, things money can’t buy. So why limit yourself to hearts, roses, chocolates, and dinner dates? And why do so on February 14?
