If you don’t understand dancehall, you will find it difficult to fathom how the current champion of the dancehall, Vybz Kartel, would have a difficult time coming up with enough money to file an appeal in Jamaica.
For those who understand the genre, however, they know that a dancehall artist makes most of his or her money from touring, shows and dub plates. So when an artist is incarcerated and cannot do shows or dubs, their earning potential is severely impacted.
Therefore it is not difficult to understand why Vybz Kartel who has been locked up for over five years would have a difficult time coming up with the legal fees to file his appeal, regardless of the fact that he has had a slew of hit songs during this time.
Money problem seems to be the main reason why Vybz Kartel’s appeal has taken so long to be filed. It was months ago that Kartel’s attorney revealed that all the necessary paperwork were prepared and ready to be filed, yet it was not being done.
This week the attorney finally revealed that all the legal fees have now been taken care of and the appeal will be filed in the near future. We are not sure if Vybz Kartel raised the money by himself or if he got some help from the dancehall fraternity. Interestingly enough, however, the attorney made the revelation about Kartel’s legal fees being paid just one day after Sean Kingston visited the world boss in prison.
Vybz Kartel is serving a life sentence after being convicted for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. If Vybz Kartel appeal is denied, he would have to serve 35 years before being eligible for parole.
