Vybz Kartel got very good news today when the court of appeal ruled that they could present new evidence in his appeal case. However, he later got bad news when the case got postponed until next week.
The court ruled that attorneys for Vybz Kartel and his three co-defendants will only get a day each to present their case. The prosecution will also get one day to present their argument. So instead of three weeks, the appeal trial will only last one week but it won’t get back on track until next Monday the 16th of July.
In 2014, Kartel, whose given name is Adidja Palmer, and Shawn Storm, born Shawn Campbell, along with Kahira Jones and Andre St John were convicted for killing Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams in August 2011.
The Court of Appeal began hearing their case today and was scheduled to continue doing so for three weeks.
However, following a ruling by President of the Court of Appeal Justice Dennis Morrison, who is presiding over the case, the hearing is now set for one week, starting next Monday.
“Each appellant has up to one day to make the points you wish to make…” Morrison said.
Jeremy Taylor, senior deputy director of public prosecutions, also has one day to respond.
As a result of the change, the appeal was adjourned this week to allow both sides to review their presentations.
This afternoon, the appeal court also granted an application by the convicts’ lawyers to allow fresh evidence in the matter.
