It has been almost 30 years since Buju Banton sung “Boom bye bye in a batty boy head,” but the homosexual community still holds a grudge against the Rasta artiste. Even though Buju Banton was a immature teenager when he wrote the song, gays have been hell bent on making him suffer and they are always coming up with ways to crucify the artiste.

Buju Banton who is due to be released from a U.S. prison Tomorrow, December 8 is scheduled to perform in Trinidad and Tobago on April 22, 2019. This concert’s schedule have greatly angered the gays and lesbians there.

The director of Trinidad’s Coalition Advocating for Inclusion of Sexual Orientation (CAISO), Colin Robinson, expressed his anger with Buju Banton being allowed to perform there.

“Why wouldn’t LGBT people be concerned about Buju performing here? If there are folks marching at Parliament and the Hall of Justice every Friday who don’t want to share our country with us, why would it be a surprise that LGBT people aren’t happy to share our country with Jamaican homophobes?” Robinson asked.

Robinson, however, sounded like he and his organization would be willing to give Buju Banton a break if he seems like he is a change man after his release from prison.

“CAISO isn’t part of any local plans, if they exist. We have enough work to do here and now. And I have no idea if Buju will still be the person he was when he gets out of jail,” he said.

This is not the first time the homosexual community has tried to crucify reggae artistes of darker complexions. Artistes like Sizzla, Shabba Ranks, Capleton and Buju Banton have been constantly attacked by the color prejudice homosexual community. Even though lighter skin artistes like Sean Paul and Damian Marley have sung anti homosexual lyrics, they have never had to face the wrath that their darker counterparts had to. Paul has made it clear in his song that he will never play “Number two”, while Marley had lyrics like “Funny man get drop like bad habit” which is pretty much the equivalent of boom bye bye.

In 2009, Buju Banton had a 40 minute sit-down with members of San Francisco’s gay community. The meeting was held in Larkspur, California, and was used to discuss what was described as his troubling history with gay people. Both parties said the meeting was “civil”.

Buju Banton is famous for hit songs like Deportee, Wanna be loved and Untold Stories but Boom bye bye is what they gay community has used to define the artiste’s career.
